Lateral Reading Method

Step 1: How does the organization describe itself?

  • Go to the homepage of the organization and look for the about us section
  • Is the organization transparent as to it's primary purpose?

Step 2: How do other sites describe that organization or the author?

  • Search Google with the name of the organization or the Author and the phrase "fact checking"  OR "fact finder"
  • What do the fact checker sites say about that organization?

Step 3: If you can't find any material at the fact checker sites, how does it compare with other similar sites?

  • Look for a similar article title or information on another site.
  • How do the different sites compare with each other.

Step 4: If you are reading an online scientific news article with no citations.

  • Are there peer reviewed publications out there that verify the information being presented in the news article?
  • You can do this by searching Google with the words in the news title and try searching Google Scholar for scientific studies on that same topic.

Step 5: After getting all this information do you trust this resource enough to cite it in your research paper?  Yes or No
