DAAC: Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Start here

Before you start your research

Before you start looking for your sources, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do I already know about my topic? Do I know enough to know what I'm looking for?
  • What kind of terms do writers in this field use to describe my subject?  Examples:
    • Therapy vs Treatment
    • Alcohol dependent vs. Alcoholic
    • Mental illness vs. Mental problems
  • Can I state my topic in the form of a question?

Background information on your topic

These sources may be helpful in gaining an understanding of what subjects the experts are interested in (and writing about) regarding this topic.

What kind of resources should you choose?

  • What kind of credentials should the author have?
  • How in-depth should your resources be?
    • Scholarly or Consumer? Or both?
  • Does the date of publication matter for your resources?
  • Does the place of publication matter?
