HIST 1302 - Sprehe: Help!

What if I can't find anything on my topic?

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Unlike searching on an internet browser, the library's catalog and article databases do not use natural language.  You can't ask a question or use a sentence.
    • For instance, instead of, "How did World War ii affect working women?," identify the main elements of your question and search those terms.
  • Identify some other terms or phrases you can use to state your research topic.  When you are searching scholarly journals, authors almost always use terminology that is specific to their field.  Use your textbook or a reference book to find terms / proper names.
    • Example:  Instead of, "Abe Lincoln," use "Abraham Lincoln"
  • If you are getting too many irrelevant articles, try narrowing your search by making it more specific.  Examples:
  • If you aren't getting any articles on your topic, you might have to use broader search terms and try to find your topic within those broader articles.  Example:

Search Tips

Searching for a phrase?

Putting it in quotation marks tells the search that you want that exact phrase, not just any of the words contained within it.

Ex: "civil society"  "Immanuel Kant" "evolutionary ethics"

Want to search for all forms of a word simultaneously?

Use the * as a wild card.  Example:

  • Philosoph* will include Philosophy, Philosopher, Philosophers, and Philosophical in your search all at once.
